We Have Added Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS)

The Global Industry Classification Standard is an industry taxonomy developed in 1999 by MSCI and Standard & Poor’s for use by the global financial community. The GICS structure consists of 11 sectors, 24 industry groups, 69 industries and 158 sub-industries into which S&P has categorized all major public companies.

GICS is the premier industry taxonomy that will help you find companies from very broad to very specific industry groups. The following are the 4 different sets of classifications you’ll have access to, in order of broadest to most specific:

  1. GICS Sector (broadest classification)
  2. GICS Industry Group
  3. GICS Industry
  4. GICS Sub-Industry (most specific classification)

There’s two ways to take advantage of this as a FAST Graphs subscriber, using Portfolio Review and Screening.

Portfolio Review

Under the General section in Portfolio Review, you’ll be able to select any/all of the classifications available that were previously stated above.

Once selected, it acts like a normal Portfolio Review which you can sort the portfolio on any of the selected items.

Screening

Using the Screening tool will allow you to find specific types companies by any classification. Simply select from the dropdown what type of classification you would like to search for. There is also an added search function to help find the specific GICS classification you are looking for.

For example, if you wanted to search for REITs, select GICS Industry and type “REIT” into the search (the top blank line). From here, you will see that REITs are broken down into two types – mortgage and equity REITs.

To drill down for more specific type of REITs, select GICS Sub-Industry and search for “REIT” again. This will break down the mortgage and equity REITs seen above into their individual types.
